Upon your hearing the otherday Giphantia much praisedby some friends, and those no illjudges, you expressed a desire to seeit in English, as you had not, yousaid, French enough to read the original.I immediately resolved togratify your desire, and that veryday sat about the translation.

It is now finished: and, as myhand is not very legible, I take theliberty to address it to you in printwith this Epistle Dedicatory; which,as neither you, nor the Author,want any encomiums, nor theTranslator any excuses, I shall cutshort, and beg leave to subscribemyself with great respect and sincerity,
