The papers gathered into this series, originallypublished in various periodicals, have alreadybeen reprinted—the earliest in date more thanthirty years ago; the others, with the exception oftwo, more recently, in a volume entitled “Portraitsof Places.” They have been here once more placedtogether, for the great advantage they will be feltto derive from the company and support of Mr.Pennell’s illustrations. Each article is marked withviits date, and it is obvious that the impressions andobservations they for the most part embody hadsprung from an early stage of acquaintance withtheir general subject-matter. They represent agood many wonderments and judgments and emotions, whether felicities or mistakes, the fine freshnessof which the author has—to his misfortune,no doubt—sufficiently outlived. But they mayperhaps on that very account present something ofa curious interest. I may add that I have againattentively looked them over, with a view to anypossible amendment of their form or enhancementof their meaning, and that I have nowhere scrupledto rewrite a sentence or a passage on judging itsusceptible of a better turn.
