To
MY MOTHER.
Circumstances have led me to follow the courseof modern history into somewhat unfrequentedchannels, and in the pursuit of my main object itis occasionally my good fortune to come across apiece of unused or unfamiliar contemporaryinformation—some faded manuscript or forgottennewsletter—which seems to throw fresh light upon animportant period or an interesting personality of thepast. It is true that in some cases the mattersrecounted are not of any great historical significance, but even then there is generally some quaint glimpseto be caught of bygone manners or events whichredeems the document from worthlessness. Fromsuch treasure-trove as this, and from other sourceswhich have generally been overlooked or neglectedby English historians, the studies contained in thepresent book have been drawn; and it is hoped thatsome fresh knowledge as well as amusement may begained from them.
If the reader is only half as much interested inperusing as I have been in writing them, I shallconsider myself very fortunate.
Some of the studies have already appeared inMagazines, but the principal portion of the bookis now printed for the first time.
