The South and the North of Europe arecontrasted in this volume. Not by anyformal comparison of the morals andmanners, the institutions and conditionof the peoples in different latitudes, butby candid statement and description, Ihave sought to give a fair view of life as it is in Spainand Scandinavia.

Since the journey was made, the Queen of Spain hasfled, and the Emperor of France has perished fromamong men. But the social life of the nations remainsthe same from age to age.

viiiThe Alhambra is a type of the South. The Kremlinis a symbol of the North. Both of them are fortressesenclosing palaces: the glory of Spain in ruins, the prideof the North in its strength and beauty.

Vague and indefinite ideas of these wonderful edifices, and of the countries they represent, have been entertainedby many, who may find in these pages picturesof things as they are, which the writer trusts are faithfuland portable.
