The girls of Silver Spur ranch were allvery busy helping Mary, the eldest, withher wedding sewing. Silver Spur was rathera pretentious name for John Spooner's littleTexas cattle-farm, but Elizabeth, the seconddaughter, who had an ear attuned to sweetsounds, had chosen it; as a furtherconfirmation of the fact she had covered anold spur with silver-leaf and hung it overthe doorway. The neighboring ranchershad laughed, at first, and old Jonah Bean,the one cowboy left in charge of the smallSpooner herd, always sniffed scornfully whenhe had occasion to mention the name of hisranch, declaring that The Tin Spoon wouldsuit it much better. However, in timeeverybody became used to it, and SilverSpur the ranch remained--somehowElizabeth always had her own way.
