XXXI.—MR. T. SIDNEY COOPER, R.A.
The first sight I obtained ofMr. Cooper was of considerableinterest. He lives in abeautiful spot, about a mileand a half from Canterbury—atVernon Holme, Harbledown;and as I entered the gate I caughtsight of Mr. Cooper before his easel in hisstudio, taking advantage of the light of aglorious winter's day, and working awayat a canvas which I subsequently learntwas intended, with another, to form his contributionto this year's exhibition at the RoyalAcademy. I stood for a moment quietly andrespectfully looking on before ringing thebell at the front door. The canvas presenteda landscape, and the cattle were justoutlined in with pencil. The painter was workingwithout the aid of glasses, and this for aman who is in his ninety-first year maycertainly be said to be highly respectable.Somewhat below the medium height, withmarvellously penetrating eyes, scarcely thesign of the stoop of old age, a hand as steadyas in '35, when he was just beginning tomake a name, and silvery white hair abouthis head—it was an impressive picture.T. Sidney Cooper's brilliant work of thepast and to-day calls for all recognitionof his gifts, but it is only when onecatches sight of him as I did—snow,nothing but snow, everywhere outside,and the painter,now in the winterof life, clingingwith all the oldlove to his sheep
