CHAPTER I

Things were going on blithely at Woodburn,everybody deeply interested in the preparationsfor the approaching wedding, as wereall the relatives and connections on the neighboringestates and those on more southernplantations. Woodburn seemed a centre ofattraction; relatives and friends were constantlycoming and going, many consultationswere held as to suitable gifts, especiallyfor Grace and Harold. There was greatinterest shown by all in the preparation ofthe trousseau, and Alma and one or twoassistants were very busy over it.

There were many shopping expeditions, inwhich Grace sometimes shared, though rather[Pg 2]against Harold's wishes, so fearful was hethat she might take cold or suffer from over-exertion.He had long been her carefulphysician, but now was not only that, butalso her promised husband and ardent lover.And to please him Grace left the greater partof the shopping to the other members of thefamily, and made some of her selections bysamples brought by them or the mails.

In the meantime, plans for the wedding andthe honeymoon were discussed. Some onespoke of a trip to the North, but Haroldvetoed that promptly. "It was too late inthe season now for Grace to try that. Hemust take her to a warmer climate."

"Then let us all go to Viamede for thewinter," suggested his mother. "Would notthat suit you, Gracie dear?"

"Yes, indeed, Grandma Elsie; I think thereis no sweeter spot upon earth," was thepleased response.

"Then that is where we will go," Haroldsaid with a happy laugh, "and I hope our[Pg 3]mother and other dear ones will either accompanyor follow us."

"Oh, I like that plan," exclaimed Violet,"but I think few of us will be quite readyto leave our homes here by the time the bridalparty starts."

"Then suppose you go in relays," suggest
