PREFACE

oys are today regarded as educationalfactors in the life of boys andgirls. New toys come into demandat frequent intervals in the growthand mental development of the child. On accountof the unfailing interest on the part ofthe pupils in toys and because of the unlimitededucational possibilities contained in toy making,this work is rightfully taking an increasinglyimportant place in the manual artsprogram in the schools.

This book is the outgrowth of toy-makingproblems given to junior-high and high-schoolpupils. The author claims no originality forsome of the toys. However, most of themhave been originated or improved upon in theauthor's classes.

While it is entirely satisfactory to have anyof the toys mentioned in this book made asindividual projects, they are here offered assuitable group projects or production projects,and it is hoped that the suggested form of shoporganization for production work as treated inPart I is flexible enough so that the plan canbe applied to most any shop conditions.

The drawings of toys in Part II will suggesta variety of articles which may be used incarrying out the production work.

Of course, the success of organizing and conductingclasses for this kind of work dependslargely upon the instructor. He must knowdefinitely what he is trying to get done. Hemust adopt and pursue such methods ofdealing with both the members of the class andthe material as will contribute directly towardsthe desired end.

Toy making carried on by the so-called productiveplan, if handled properly, will bringout many of the essentials of an organizationtypical of the commercial industries. Togetherwith its educational possibilities and its powerto attract the attention of those en
