Sometime early in the secondquarter of the century, in theCity of Penn, and in what wasthen known as Delaware-Fourthstreet, soon after dusk in theevening, occurred the unimportantevents of which I shall speak.

The room was paneled inwhite three feet up from thefloor, and above this a fox-huntwas repeated in lively colorson every square of the paperwhich covered the walls. Greathickory logs, ablaze on the deephearth, cast rosy light on amantelpiece, in the style of theDirectory, pretty with Cupids inrelief dragging chariots througha tangle of roses.
