I have been silent for thirty years. Duringthat long period I have taken little part in thepublic life of the world, have written nothing beyondoccasional letters and newspaper articles, andhave conversed with few persons, except childrenin parks and streets. I have found children alwayssympathetic and appreciative. For this reason Ihave readily entered into their play and their moreserious moods; and for this reason, also, have dedicatedthis book to them and to their children.
