CHAPTER XII.

As Peggy sat writing in the study oneafternoon, a shaggy head came peeringround the door, and Robert's voice saideagerly:

"Mariquita! A word in your ear!Could you come out and take a turnround the garden for half an hour beforetea, or are you too busy?"

"Not at all. I am entirely at yourdisposal," said Peggy elegantly, andthe young people made their way tothe cloak-room, swung on coats andsailor-hats, and sallied out into the freshautumn air.

"Mariquita," said Robert; then,using once more the name by which hechose to address Peggy in their confidentialconfabs, "Mariquita, I am indifficulties. There is a microscopeadvertised in Science this week that isthe very thing I have been pining forfor the last six years. I must get it, ordie, but the question is—how? Yousee before you a penniless man." Helooked at Peggy as he spoke, and mether small, demure smile.
