PREFACE

Paper-making, in common with many other industries, isone in which both engineering and chemistry play importantparts. Unfortunately the functions of the engineer andchemist are generally regarded as independent of oneanother, so that the chemist is only called in by the engineerwhen efforts along the lines of mechanical improvementhave failed, and vice versa. It is impossible, however, todraw a hard and fast line, and the best results in the art ofpaper-making are only possible when the manufacturerappreciates the fact that the skill of both is essential toprogress and commercial success.

In the present elementary text-book it is only proposedto give an outline of the various stages of manufacture andto indicate some of the improvements made during recentyears.

The author begs to acknowledge his indebtedness tomanufacturers and others who have given permission for theuse of illustrations.
