Thehymn of “Peace upon earth, good-will towardsmen,” had been chanted by thousands of voicesthroughout the land, from the grand cathedral-choirto the simple singers of the villagechurch. Charity had extended her munificenthand to the poor and needy, lighting up smileson many a care-worn face. Hospitality welcomedthe good, the beautiful, and the greatto the lordly mansions of the rich.
