Japanese boys have not been introducedvery much to their little American friends, and the purpose of this book is to providean introduction by telling some of theexperiences which are common to mostJapanese boys of the present time, togetherwith some account of the customsand manners belonging to their life. I canat least claim that the story is told as itcould be only by one who had actuallylived the life that is portrayed. I haveendeavored to hold the interest of myyoung readers by bringing in more or lessof amusement. The little girl companionis introduced to widen the interest and addsomewhat more of the story element thanwould otherwise be present. The sketchescomposing the various chapters are necessarilydisconnected, but they form a series[Pg iv]of pictures, priceless at least to the author, which foreign eyes have seldom been allowedto see.
