The Divine Heart (19th Century—German)

PREFACE

This little book has been written for the pleasureof those amateurs who are more interested inthe idea which inspires a picture than in thepicture’s workmanship. Naturally, the moreaccomplished the artist, the more clearly andattractively is he able to set forth his meaning;but with art criticism this book has nothing todo, and the attributions are, for the most part, simply those of the official catalogues of therespective galleries.

To explain completely even so small a branchof Christian symbolism as that of flowers, anexhaustive knowledge is required of the developmentof Christian theology, and of the varyingforce with which different doctrines appealedat different times to the public mind. But still, these notes may be of some interest to those whocare to trace in the work sanctioned by theChurch and reverenced by the people the historyof Western idealism, and who are sometimespuzzled by the conventions employed by theMasters to illustrate the Divine Mysteries.
