Before the perusal of this book is entered upon, itseems desirable that I should myself state to thereader, what led me to undertake these missionarytours. It may be well to refer also to the objects Ihad particularly in view in connection with them;to mention how far the desired result has beenattained; and to notice a few other points relating tothese journeys.
During many years the thought occurred to meagain and again, that it might be the will of God Ishould seek to benefit His children and the unconverted,not through my publications only, but byministering personally amongst them in other placesbesides Bristol; but my position as pastor of a largechurch, and as Director of a great Institution, whichseemed to require my constant presence, for a longtime put aside the thought. At last, however, whenstaying in the Isle of Wight in the autumn of 1874,finding that my preaching at Ventnor and Ryde hadbeen unusually blessed and valued, I judged, that,[iv]having very efficient fellow labourers in the Churchat Bristol, I could be spared, and that my absencewould not be particularly felt. With reference tothe work on Ashley Down, too, as Mr. Wright hadfor many years been an able helper in connectionwith it; as he had by that time been appointed Co-Directorof the Institution; and as I had labouredin word and doctrine in Bristol (almost exclusively)for forty-three years; it was laid upon my heart togo from city to city, and from country to country, inorder to benefit (if possible) both the Church ofChrist and the world at large, by my ministry andexperience. Accordingly, after much prayer andwaiting upon God, I decided upon devoting a veryconsiderable portion of my time habitually to thisservice, as long as health and strength should be continuedto me.
The objects I have in view in undertaking thesetours are the following:—
