For five years, during my residence in Australia,I had the privilege of contributing to the EnglishChristian World a large number of articles on lifein the Commonwealth. These articles excited a greatamount of interest amongst all classes, and broughtme a vast correspondence, which made it abundantlyclear that even well-educated people at home knowlittle about the inner life of Australia. This bookis an attempt to throw some light upon that far-offcountry, and to make Australia “live.” Many bookshave been written about the Commonwealth, but nonequite on the lines of the following pages. In a seriesof impressionist sketches various phases of Australianlife are set forth—the life in the midst of whichI worked. The editor of the Christian World hasgenerously permitted me to make free use of thearticles I contributed to that journal. I gratefullyacknowledge this kindness.
